What is Neurology and Neurosurgery? Does my pet need to be seen?

Powers Pet Emergency and Specialty Service (PPERS) is proud to announce Colorado Spring’s first and premier small animal Neurology & Neurosurgical service. PPERS offers a state-of-the-art veterinary facility open 24/7, with expertise in the diagnosis and the medical or surgical treatment of neurologic conditions.

Our pets may suffer from many of the same brain, spinal cord and neuromuscular conditions that people do. These diseases include a wide range of disorders – epilepsy, disc disease, spinal cord and brain trauma, dizziness, tumors, degenerative and metabolic abnormalities. Because diagnosis and therapy of neurological disorders can be complex and challenging, general practice veterinarians work with a specialist in neurology to provide the best treatment and care.

Powers Pet Emergency and Specialty has a wide array of advanced diagnostic modalities at their disposal to assist in the accurate diagnosis of your pet’s neurologic symptoms, including:

  • MRI scan
  • Helical CT scan
  • Spinal fluid analysis
  • Myelography
  • Electrophysiology (functional nerve and muscle testing)
  • Hearing test (BAER)
  • Muscle and nerve biopsy

In addition, our neurologist, Dr. Rainier Ko, is only 1 of 6 double-boarded veterinary neurosurgeons worldwide with extensive training in all types of neurosurgery, including:

  • Laminectomy
  • Fenestration
  • Ventral Slot
  • Atlanto-axial instability repair
  • Spinal fracture-luxation repair
  • Craniotomy-craniectomy
